Five of the best: Vintage clothes shops in Scotland

Vintage Guru, Starry Starry Night, Barnardos Vintage, Herman Brown
Vintage Guru
195 Byres Road, Glasgow, 0141 339 4750, www.vintageguru.co.uk
Existing as a web distributor for 15 years, Vintage Guru is now 3D, catering for the ladies and oft-neglected retro-hungry gents. Past List favourite finds include a white and gold '70s style romper suit (now property of The List; not for resale to readers).
Starry Starry Night
19 Dowanside Lane, Glasgow, 0141 337 1837
With lace, velvet and delightfully extravagant hats, this Glasgow hideaway is the ultimate dressing-up box. Perhaps too grandiose for day-to-day wear, you're sure to find special pieces you'll treasure for a lifetime.
Barnado's Vintage
54 Wilson Street, Merchant City, Glasgow and 116 West Bow, Grassmarket, Edinburgh, 0131 225 4751, www.barnardos.org.uk
Barnardos' Edinburgh store was the first charity boutique of its kind, packed with retro labels. Looking for a specific vintage find? The team will put it on their 'want' list and look out for it when bringing items into the store.
Herman Brown
151 West Port, Edinburgh, 0131 228 2589, www.hermanbrown.co.uk
A classy affair, with men's and women's fashions ranging from the 1940s to present day. Rifle through their impressive stock of jewellery or snap up a 1950s power compact for the ultimate on Joan Holloway chic.
Watermelon
603 Great Western Road, Glasgow, 0141 334 3900
Started by a former employee of Edinburgh's Armstrong's (an Aladdin's cave of retro gear), Watermelon helped to revive Glasgow's second-hand clothing market and inject a dose of classy sass. Small, crammed but filled with wearable, reasonably priced pieces that are well worth the sardine-in-a-can impression you'll have to do to get in the place at weekends.
