Launching today, 17 Feb, FILMPIXS is a new global streaming platform, championing short films, alongside international feature documentaries, with a line-up that's drawn from leading film festivals like Cannes, Toronto, Venice, Sundance and SXSW, and many award nominees and winners included. Daughter (Dcera)

Czech director Daria Kashcheeva's 2019 Oscar-nominated animation was the winner of the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2020, as well as picking up numerous other global awards. Innovatively combining handheld camerawork with stop-motion animation, its gritty, documentary feel was inspired by the Dogme 95 movement and the films of the Dardennes, as Kashcheeva wordlessly communicates the complex relationship between a father and daughter.

Copy Shop

From animation to live action, here's another Oscar-nominated short for you, this time from Austrian filmmaker Virgil Widrich. This 2001 film boasts an expertly aged black and white aesthetic and sees a copy shop manager (played by Johannes Silberschneider) making eyes at the woman in the flower shop across the way and going about his daily routine, before things take a bizarre and sinister turn when he begins making his photocopies.

Fast Film

Widrich is a master of the short film medium and in 2003 he produced another gem, Fast Film, a Cannes Palme d'Or-nominated rapid-fire montage, which incorporates thousands of iconic movie images into a frenzied chase sequence. This beautifully constructed film which blends live action and animation riffs on the old-school staple of a hero rescuing an imperilled woman, and features Frankenstein's monster, Godzilla, Harrison Ford, Humphrey Bogart, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Sean Connery, Cary Grant, and more!

Blue Fear (Filles Bleues, Peur Blanche)

Another Cannes selection, this time from last year, this 10-minute French animated short sees a man driving his girlfriend to meet his parents in Provence, when they are ambushed by a band of women on horseback. Co-directors Marie Jacotey and Lola Halifa-Legrand take a mundane and relatable situation as their starting point, before diving off into enjoyably odd territory.

The Smallest Apartment in Paris (Le Plus Petit Appartement de Paris)

We at The List are huge fans of French actress Laetitia Dosch (the star of the very entertaining Jeune Femme, and the recent Simple Passion). Here, she's starring in Hélèna Villovitch's 2014 short, which sees her character Carla thrilled at securing 16 whole cubic metres of living space, only to find out that someone else (Thomas Scimeca's François) is also keen to move in.
