A painting by Lucian Freud which took more than a year to complete is expected to generate excitement amongst collectors when it goes on sale next month.

Painted in 1992, Ib and Her Husband is a portrait of the artist’s daughter Isobel while pregnant, lying with her husband.

The picture goes on sale November 13 and is expected to break all previous records for Freud’s work. The most expensive Freud to date was the sale of Bruce Bernard, which fetched £7.8 million in June.

Head of post war and contemporary art at Christie’s, Pilar Ordovas said: “It’s not often his work comes on the market because it takes so long to create and complete.

“His work requires much more attention and he appears to have worked on this one over a year, because it took longer than Isobel’s pregnancy.

“Freud is of the view that a sitter influences everything around them and needs the sitter to be present.”
