Friendsical ★★☆☆☆

If you were to ask anyone born before 2000 if they had watched at least one episode of Friends, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who said no. For a decade, a group of six twentysomethings graced our screens every week with such success that 28 years later we’re still grasping for more. Enter Friendsical, a parody musical comedy that unfortunately falls desperately short.
Friendsical is a play within a play which is meant to highlight the relationship between Ross and Rachel throughout all ten seasons. While the music is upbeat and the actors’ faces are comically enthusiastic, the show lacks structure. The storyline resembles a game of snakes and ladders: just as you think you’re moving forward, you’re pulled right back to the beginning, with the show struggling to move past the fourth season. The characters you know as well as your own pals are lacklustre, with Chandler being the only stand-out in the main group. There is no shortage of jazz hands, but in the end, it simply makes you want to go home and watch an episode on Netflix instead.
Assembly Rooms, until 28 August, 7.55pm.
