Fringe preview: Katherine Ryan – Kathbum

Canadian comic gets set to deliver a personal show with views and jokes that need to be heard
It’s hard to believe that only four years ago Katherine Ryan first appeared on the Fringe scene with an intriguing but patchy debut, Little Miss Conception. For that finale, she actually welcomed her mother up on stage and in last year’s show, Glam Role Model, crowds witnessed a mini-set warm-up from Violet, her young daughter, ‘flatmate and best friend’.
She’s keeping it ever more firmly in the family this time around with Kathbum (a childhood nickname and her Twitter handle) which uses her impending trip back to Canada for her sister’s wedding as a trigger to tackle the themes of home. Ryan will seek to explore how she feels about the country she left behind several years ago in order to find fame and fortune in the UK. Given the number of TV panel shows that she’s been cropping up on of late, she appears to be on the right track for such rewards.
Kathbum may well be Katherine Ryan’s most personal show to date but you can still be assured of some cracking jokes from one of the true rising stars of the British comedy world. This former employee of Hooters who has campaigned for No More Page Three has opinions and comedy that are always worth listening to.
Katherine Ryan: Kathbum, The Stand 3, 558 7272, 7–22 Aug (not 17), 4.25pm, £12. Preview 6 Aug, £10.
