Frogs In Bogs is many things (an underground adventure with plumber amphibians is one), but it’s certainly not subtle. There’s an evil toilet duck, a constipated goldfish, techno beats and more poo jokes than you can shake a toilet brush at. Audience participation involves what is essentially a Zumba class, with everyone on their feet, wiggling their hips and yelling the Welsh word for parsnip. And yet, somehow, it never feels like it’s gone too far. The environmental message is equally clear. The evil duck is a less than nuanced stand-in for water companies dumping sewage into our waterways; a particularly poignant subject if, like many of us, you’ve been avoiding swimming in Portobello this summer.

At the end we are even offered froggy postcards to sign and send to our local MPs. But politics certainly never gets in the way of the fun. There are outrageous dance moves, gloriously disgusting noises and performers giving 110% for the entire 45 minutes. It’s silly, energetic and unapologetically full of poo, but there’s plenty here for grown-ups to enjoy alongside the younger audience members. Underneath all the toilet humour is a timely reminder of what happens when we treat our waterways like one big flushing toilet. A ribbiting 45 minutes.
