Gaelic culture in April 2025

In Edinburgh, Gaelic singer Rena Gertz will perform alongside accompanists at The Royal Oak’s Wee Folk club (Sunday 6). Gertz will then join Lothian Gaelic Choir for their Annual Spring Concert at Morningside United Church (Saturday 26), including performances from Bun-sgoil Taobh na Pàirce pupils, led by Petrea Cooney. John Roy Stuart’s Latha Chùilodair will be staged in English translation too at the Fox Tavern (Wednesday 16). Join performer Michael Nevin for the one-man show, telling this tale of romance, exile and return. 

For those of an academic bent in Glasgow, The Matheson Lecture will be given by Prof Elva Johnstone (University College Dublin), hosted by the University’s Celtic and Gaelic Department (Tuesday 29). In Edinburgh, brush up your own speaking skills at Cabadaich is Deoch (Wednesday 2) at Safari Lounge, then join in the conversation at Cearcall Còmhraidh at the St Andrew Rooms, North Street (Tuesday 1).

Promoting her new album, Fable, Ainsley Hamill will perform at Ardkinglas House, Cairndow (Sunday 27). Prior to this in Glasgow, join Mull’s Alasdair Whyte for a song workshop (Saturday 12). Participants will learn traditional songs, gain insights into Gaelic pronunciation, and learn about the stories behind them at the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

Violinist and composer Donald Grant grew up immersed in traditional music in the Highlands. At Inverness’ Eden Court, Thuit An Oidhche Oirnn will celebrate his passion for gathering with others to share a love of music-making, alongside Mischa MacPherson and others (Monday 14). Later, multi-award-winning Mànran (pictured above) play the Empire Theatre as part of their 15th anniversary celebrations (Saturday 26). 

Get your cèilidh on throughout Scotland in April. The Gorms play Scottish and Irish tunes at Whiski Bar in Edinburgh each Monday (7, 14, 21, 28). Strathenderick U16s Rugby Team host Cèilidh for the Cup at Killearn Village Hall (Friday 25) – there will be an auction and raffle too! Glasgow’s Avant Garde host weekly cèilidhs too on King Street each Saturday (5, 12, 19, 26). 

For children, come along to Dalkeith Library and pick up some new words while doing arts and crafts at Gaelic Family Fun (Friday 11). There are also Gaelic Bookbug Sessions running at Edinburgh’s National Library Of Scotland (Thursday 10) and in Kirkintilloch at the William Patrick Library (Tuesday 22), supported by Scottish Book Trust.

Finally, try your hand at the visual arts with Inverness artist Eòghann MacColl’s mixed media arts workshops at Paisley Ltd’s Art Department (Saturday 26). Here, creativity takes centre stage and boundaries are meant to be shattered.
