Gaelic culture in September 2024
This month’s round-up features ceilidhs and calligraphy

With the turn of autumn, Gaelic events across the central belt see speakers and learners engage with the shift in seasons. Kick off your September with a Gaelic nature walk, guided by Bria Mason. Explore Roslin Glen (Thursday 5), learning plant names in Gaelic and English, and discovering more about the Gaelic relationship with nature through plant-related traditions you encounter. For something a bit more strenuous, potentially over rough terrain, sign up for Celtic Crag. Join the resident ranger for an exploration of Celtic myths, taking participants right back to Holyrood Park’s Bronze and Iron Age history. Embark from Broad Pavement Carpark (Sunday 22).
In Perthshire, head to the Gaelic Café in Aberfeldy, a regular get-together at the Birk’s Cinema. The September session (Saturday 7) introduces Jacqui Calder, who will discuss botanicals used in contemporary practice, which were traditionally part of Highland herbalism. At Dalkeith Library, there is also a family gardening session (Friday 6) promising garden-themed games, colouring and songs.
Whether you are fluent, a learner or just curious to get a feel for the language, little ones four-and-under can enjoy a Gaelic Bookbug session at Wiiliam Patrick Library in Kirkintilloch (Tuesday 24). RSCDS Edinburgh also host Scottish dance classes for children P5-and-up at Greenbank Church (Saturdays), offering young dancers the chance to enjoy Scottish country and ceilidh dancing in a fun environment and meeting new friends.
Could yours be the next illuminated manuscript in the tradition of the Book Of Deer? Join professional calligrapher Jemma Toller and create a decorative capital letter inspired by the NLS exhibition Renaissance: Scotland And Europe, 1480-1630 (Saturday 21). Open until April, the exhibition showcases works of Renaissance Scots both famous and nearly forgotten, in Scots, Gaelic, Latin and other European languages.
If your month needs music, then Bothan Dhùn Èideann have it covered with Bàrrasaig at Edinburgh’s Storytelling Centre (Friday 6). If you’re Glasgow-based, Sian’s Ceitlin Lilidh, Eilidh Cormack and Ellen MacDonald feature at Cottier’s (Wednesday 11). Get your cèilidh on across Scotland with Ceithir playing the Torphichen Village Cèilidh (Saturday 28) at the Community Education Centre. Pure Scotch monthly cèilidhs also continue in St Andrews, so get your kilt on and head to the Town Hall (Thursday 26).
