George Ryegold: Adulterated

Sinisterly calming style of the ‘Dr’ who argues that 'depravity is subjective'

A creation of Toby Williams, comedian, writer and voice over artist (the latter a fact which won’t go unnoticed), ‘Dr’ George Ryegold stalks the stage imparting his logically immersive views on a series of controversial subjects with all the confidence of an alcoholic supply teacher. Vaguely threatening at all times, Ryegold covers topics including how to best improve the lives of starving children in Africa and a quick exploration of shokushu goukan (that’s Japanese tentacle porn to you and me).

Continually returning to ominous hints as to why he’s no longer on the medical registry, and with a turn of phrase like a needle in the eye, Ryegold’s after dinner speaker stage presence is cool and confident and he is shocking without crossing the line that leads to needlessly offensive.

Depravity is subjective, Ryegold maintains, while tackling the tough subject of late term abortion cut-off period. The slickness with which he persuades an audience member to be his human sexual position demonstration prop really is a testament to his sinisterly calming style.

Underbelly, Bristo Square, 0844 545 8252, until 26 Aug (not 14), 9.40pm, £8.50-£9.50 (£7-£8).
