Ghosthunter ★★★★★
An intimate and chilling site-specific affair from Visible Fictions

Deep down, we all know that nothing here can really harm us. We’re well aware that every unexpected bang, flickering light or book falling from a shelf is the work of an efficient technical team, not a visitor from another realm. But that doesn’t stop the screams, shouts and frantic arm grabs that regularly take place during Visible Fictions’ ambitious new production.
Having set up shop in Silver Cloud Studio, a vast warehouse space on the outskirts of Glasgow, the company set about creating an experience unlike anything they’ve done before. Imagine dropping an escape room and an episode of Most Haunted into a blender then pouring it over a site-specific theatre set: that’s Ghosthunter. Aimed at teenagers and young adults, but ideal for anyone who likes a good fright and enjoys problem solving, this intimate offering (16 people max) is exciting, funny, intriguing, heart-warming and, depending on your fear threshold, occasionally terrifying.
We’re welcomed inside the former home of Edward, a recently departed elderly gentleman whose son has brought in a team to investigate some paranormal activity. Our host (played brilliantly by Natalie Arle-Toyne) takes us into the living room and enlists us in her search for answers. Who is haunting the building? What was the secret that tore this household apart? And why doesn’t that family photo hanging in the hall feel quite right? Armed with ghosthunting apparatus that makes all the right bleeps, and a dodgy torch, she sends us out into the darkness to search bedrooms, a kitchen and study for clues.
Becky Minto’s design is a genuine work of art, populating the house with furniture, ornaments, games and décor that are all stuck in time. Each room offers up a world of possibilities and if the narrative we need to uncover feels complicated at first, Arle-Toyne is a pass master at pointing us in the right direction. Unlike an escape room, where the sense of achievement comes from opening the door, here our final reward is a truly touching ending that makes all those efforts worthwhile.
Ghosthunter is at Silver Cloud Studio, Glasgow, until Saturday 17 June.
