Graham Dickson: No One Deserves This More Than You comedy review – Beckett-like interactions

As we enter the room, Graham Dickson is pacing the stage, seemingly distracted. It turns out that rather than performing his ‘play about moths’, he’s been caught short and needs to record a self-tape audition for a prestigious action film. What follows is a Beckettian farce, with Dickson constantly calling on members of the audience to assist him in increasingly frantic attempts to score a role… any role. Most of these interactions require him to improvise with his selected audience members to whom he transplants the personae of his father, his ex-girlfriend’s mate, her boyfriend and others, and these sections really play to his strengths as a shrewd performer (and Austentatious member, unsurprisingly).

His scripted moments, though few and far between, demonstrate a real aptitude for comic timing, including a sublime meta-textual ‘callback’ joke. Although the threat of audience interaction keeps the crowd on edge, he’s a sweetly comforting presence who gently reassures his reticent co-performers. In fact, he’s so adept at this that he manages to push his stooges further than they might have thought possible. No One Deserves This More Than You is a wonderful showcase for Dickson’s improv skills, and the free-wheeling nature of the show guarantees a slightly different experience each time.

Graham Dickson: No One Deserves This More Than You, Pleasance Dome, until 26 August, 5.50pm.
