H6: Diary of an Assassin
(Martin Garrido Barón, Spain 2005) 92min
This repellent Spanish horror movie is a piece of facile, misogynist filth masquerading as a serious study of a serial killer’s twisted psychology. Dressed in fetishistic underwear, ‘disposable’ prostitutes are strapped to a table in a room lined with plastic sheeting, then humiliated, tortured, raped and chain-sawed to death with blood-spattering relish. These numbingly repetitive scenes are made worse by a cod-philosophical voice-over, in which the diary-keeping killer pontificates about ‘cleansing’ the sins of his victims - often to the accompaniment of lazily chosen pieces of classical music.
Utterly lacking in any behavioural insight, moral perspective or cinematic talent, it is both reprehensible and sad. Not least because the self-deluded first-time director thinks he is making a profound comment about the human condition. Like the recent spate of exploitative films about Ted Bundy, Charles Manson and ‘Hillside Strangler’ Kenneth Bianchi, this merely wallows in the depravity it so graphically depicts. (Nigel Floyd)
