Harry Hill: Pedigree Fun! ★★★★☆

When Harry Hill first exploded onto the live comedy scene in the 1990s, you could scarcely recover your breath between laughs. Soon, his large white collars, catchphrases and ability to turn almost any situation into nonsensical buffoonery caught the eye of TV executives and Hill became a mainstream sensation; although not quite in the same stratosphere as Michael McIntyre, who comes in for a few clenched fists on this new tour. But suffice to say, Hill has spent more time on screen than upon stages over the past 20 years, so it’s easy to forget just how good a stand-up he really is.

This new tour does exactly what it says on the (dog food) tin, and Pedigree Fun! has its fair share of sore-tummy inducing gag runs. And, despite performing to a camera (or in the case of You’ve Been Framed, a microphone) for umpteen years, he still knows how to work a crowd. In particular, he zones in on the older fanbase that has stuck with him through the decades, delivering a hilarious tongue-in-check reminiscence of life in the 1970s.

Much is made of wordplay, demonstrating a memory that’s sharp as a tack and a tongue that’s quick as ever. But it’s his slapstick physical comedy that lands most successfully, little of which makes any sense but none of which really needs to. And if you’ve ever wondered about the key differences between a tray bake and a tear ’n’ share, Harry Hill’s your man.

Harry Hill: Pedigree Fun! is on tour until Saturday 28 January; reviewed at Festival Theatre, Edinburgh.
