“Hip-Hop Cash Kings” revealed
American magazine Forbes has revealed the top earners in the hip-hop world, but claims their success is not solely down to their music. The highest earners have extended their skills beyond rapping and into the worlds of fashion and music management. Global star Jay-Z has been named as the “Hip-Hop Cash King” after earning $34 million in 2006. The magazine attributes his financial success to the release of his comeback album “Kingdom Come”, his managerial skills as executive of New-York based record label Def Jam Recordings, his ownership of a sports bar franchise and his endorsement deals with Budweiser, Hewlett-Packard and General Motors. The top 10 on the list have all earned income from beyond the music industry, including product endorsement, fashion lines and films. 50 Cent reached number two on the list, followed by Diddy, Timbaland and Dr Dre. Forbes associate editor Lea Goldman said: “They get that it’s not just about selling albums, but about selling a lifestyle, so they’ve ploughed their earnings into media empires that include their own record labels, clothing lines, restaurants and bars.”
