Mark Olsen and the Creekdippers Wholesome and vibrant Americana from Olsen, his wife Victoria Williams and Ben Weaver all the way from Joshua Tree, California. ABC, Glasgow, Sat 10 Sep. (Rock & Pop)

The Joyriders The Edinburgh-based pop-grungers played with Nirvana, The Lemonheads and Mercury Rev in the 90s before disintegrating in a drunken heap. Technically, they never split up so this, a one-off reformation seems all the more peculiar. This final farewell show which should be a hoot, if they can hold it together long enough. Bannerman’s, Edinburgh, Sat 9 Sep. (Rock & Pop)

Foals at Spies in the Wires I know they seem to be taking up permanent residency in the Hit List at the moment, but Spies in the Wires have pulled off another top night. Main (or is that mane . . . oh, ho ho, stop me please!) attraction are Foals, a Rapture meets Battles kind of affair, but still manages to look pretty good on the dancefloor. The kind of outfit that makes the heart grow fonder. Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, Thu 7 Sep. (Rock & Pop)

Badly Drawn Boy A welcome return for the be-hatted Manc troubadour who uses this intimate show to showcase new songs and remind us just what we were missing all this time he’s been away. King Tut’s, Glasgow, Sat 9 Sep. (Rock & Pop)

Islay Jazz Festival Get out of the city and onto the islands for a mix of jazz, which goes from pleasantly trad to decidedly futuristic with Brassjaw, Colin Steele, Haftor Medbøe, Mario Caribe and plenty more parading their wares around a variety of novel intimate venues. See preview, page 64. Various venues, Islay, Fri 15-Sun 17 Sep. (Jazz)

Aberfeldy Those sweet Scots are on the road with songs from their new album. Liquid Room, Edinburgh, Mon 18 Sep; ABC, Glasgow, Tue 19 Sep. (Rock & Pop)
