Extra Ordinary – Netflix (★★★★☆)

The week's most notable Netflix release is a modestly budgeted supernatural comedy from Ireland that takes a deadpan approach to the undead and boasts that much-needed feelgood factor. Debut helmers Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman introduce themselves in sprightly style, employing stand-up Maeve Higgins as psychic driving instructor Rose, who finds a spark with Barry Ward's Martin Martin, as well as a fiendish foe in Will Forte's occult-dabbling pop singer Christian.

Manchester by the Sea – iPlayer (★★★★★)

iPlayer isn't everyone's first-choice destination for film, but you can find gems like Foxcatcher and The Beguiled on there now. Our pick this week though is Manchester by the Sea. If your heart can bear it and you never got round to it originally, Kenneth Lonergan's 2016 double Oscar-winner remains a must-see despite the controversy surrounding lead actor Casey Affleck. Affleck plays a handyman struggling to hold himself together after unspeakable tragedy. As wryly funny as it is gut-wrenchingly sad, it's masterful stuff indeed. Definitely one for a wallow.

And Then We Danced – Curzon Home Cinema / Vimeo on Demand (★★★★☆)

One of our top cinema recommendations last week comes quickly to home entertainment. Set in an aggressively homophobic Georgia, it's the meticulously captured story of a taboo connection between two male dancers, played by Levan Gelbakhiani and Bachi Valishvili. Swedish director Levan Akin explores notions of masculinity and national pride in a film that also shrewdly employs dance to add an extra emotional dimension.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco – On Demand (★★★★★)

Inexplicably ignored when it came to awards season, one of the finest films in recent memory is now available to rent or buy. Joe Talbot's striking debut is a gorgeously melancholic and gently humorous indie located in the titular city, part-based on the life story of lead Jimmie Fails. Jonathan Majors plays Jimmie's stalwart best pal, with whom he gets into scrapes, while Rob Morgan, Finn Wittrock and Danny Glover are impressively cast.

La Belle Époque – On Demand (★★★★★)

Limited to just a handful of cinemas on release, this highly praised, high-concept rom-com from French director Nicolas Bedos went under most people's radar in the UK on its theatrical run late last year. However, our reviewer hailed it as one of year's best and now you can decide for yourselves. The prestigious players include Daniel Auteuil, Guillaume Canet, Fanny Ardant and Doria Tillier in an emotionally stirring story which finds a man attempting to recapture the first flushes of love in a very unusual way.
