Hypnotist Matt Hale: Funbelievable! 90s Rewind comedy review – An enjoyable throwback
A bit like the nineties: enjoyable to revisit, but nothing to dwell on

Just when you think you’ve seen it all at the Fringe, it’s refreshing to find the odd surprise lurking in that most unsubtle of garb: 90s neon tracksuits. Comedy hypnotist Matt Hale plunges us back into Britpop, Beanie Babies and Tazos. A simpler time, even if the fashion was abysmal. Funbelievable! 90s Rewind uses the science of hypnotism for light-hearted entertainment but never treats the subject of suggestion lightly; there’s tremendous respect in the pre-show preamble, and a welcoming nature to this high-energy demonstration of hypnotism meets town-hall disco.
So, what are we building to, now the victims have been screened and join Hale on stage: drinking vinegar? Sharing secrets? Well, as the title suggests, we’re about to get down and boogie... 90s style. Volunteers are the stars here, thankfully never fooled or humiliated. Every dance move, instrument mastered and volunteer begging for a classic tune is for the express purpose of building up to a crescendo moment where the entire room joins into one large celebration. It’s clean fun, visually appealing and entertaining to boot. That’s a bit like the nineties: enjoyable to revisit, but nothing to dwell on.
Hypnotist Matt Hale: Funbelievable! 90s Rewind, Gilded Balloon Patter House, until 25 August, 5pm.
