In The Night Garden - live in Glasgow

Toddlers TV favourite come to Glasgow Green
Walking past Glasgow Green over the next few weeks, you’d be forgiven for thinking that aliens had landed. In fact, it’s a far more innocuous gang of visitors from CBeebies’ land of charm, the Night Garden.
Taking place in a stunning, purpose-built dome, In The Night Garden Live plucks Igglepiggle, Upsy Daisy, Makka Pakka, the Tombliboos et al off the TV screen and onto the stage through a combination of larger than life costumes and puppetry. Award-winning director, Will Tuckett explains why they didn’t just head for the local theatre.
‘We didn’t want to do a straightforward TV to stage show,’ says Tuckett. ‘We wanted it to be a complete experience, and the IMAX-style projection inside the dome is totally immersive. But the main reason for doing it is because the age range is so small – and theatres aren’t really designed for 2-year-olds.’ Tickets for the eye-catching domes have been deliberately undersold, so that tiny viewers have enough wiggle room to move around.
Perfectly situated during the CBeebies bedtime hour, the TV show takes viewers (young and old) to a place of simplicity and calm. Created by Andrew Davenport, who is also responsible for In The Night Garden’s beautifully hypnotic music, both the TV programme and the stage adaptation, take a refreshingly different approach to speed.
‘The editing in the TV programme isn’t rapid fire,’ says Tuckett. ‘There’s not one thing constantly happening after another like a lot of cartoons – there are gentle moments, and the live show stays true to that.’
