International House Of Vape theatre review: Physical work about connection

At times avant-garde and at others witty and incisive, International House Of Vape is definitely among the more original shows this year’s Fringe has to offer. It begins as a business pitch, attempting to sell its audience the rights to various pro-vape plays, and succeeds in hilariously satirising start-up culture, corporate buzzwords, and the commercialisation of theatre.

International House Of Vape moves fluidly from comedy into cerebral physical theatre, with the two disparate parts bridged by a very amusing showcase of the so-called plays on offer. ‘That last part won’t have made sense to you,’ the leads explain after an emotional mime sequence. ‘It was for us.’ Instead of a marketable comedy, we’re offered a glimpse into the very real friendship between two men, their fears about aging, about not creating anything worthwhile, and their deep love for each other. It’s a stirring reminder of the power of art and its ability to make us connect.

While International House Of Vape’s foray into the surreal may not be for everyone, especially those looking for a straight comedy, it’s difficult not to feel moved by such a genuine and heartfelt piece of theatre.

International House Of Vape, Underbelly Cowgate, until 24 August, 9.30pm.
