Interview: Michelle McManus – First and last

On time out from Treasure Island, the Scottish personality talks Chanel, KT Tunsall and calendars

Singer-songwriter, columnist and all-round talent, Michelle McManus gives The List the lowdown on what makes her tick

First panto you remember going to see
Cinderella. I was six years old and I remember thinking that I wanted to live in pantoland when I grew up.

Last New Year’s Resolution you were able to keep
Absolutely none. I'm honestly the worst person ever at New Year’s Resolutions.

First thought that came into your head when you heard that Santa Claus might not be real
Why, God? Why?

The last Christmas present you received which made you deliriously happy
My friend gave me the Dieux du Stade 2014 calendar.

First record you ever bought
Chesney Hawkes: ‘The One and Only’.

Last extravagant purchase you made
I just bought myself a beautiful red crystal chandelier for my living room which takes up most of the ceiling. To be fair, it probably belongs in the Moulin Rouge and not a tenement flat in Glasgow but it was just so pretty.

First film you saw that really moved you
It has to be The NeverEnding Story. I cried for months afterwards thinking of that poor horse.

Last lie you told
My input of calories into MyFitnessPal. It’s a bad day when you start lying to an app on your phone.

First movie you ever went on a date to
I can’t remember the first movie, but a few years ago I went to see Sin City with a date and screamed and covered my eyes the whole way through it. Sadly anything above PG violence is too much for me and needless to say I didn't see him again after that little display.

Last great meal you cooked
I made lovely tandoori halibut steaks on a bed of spinach with homemade tzatziki the other evening for friends and they went down a treat.

First crush
Morten Harket from Aha.

Last book you read
One of the Harry Potter books. I just read them all on repeat.

First great piece of advice you were given
Always keep a diary as it’s amazing what you'll forget.

Last time you were starstruck
When I met Andy Bell from Erasure. I actually cried in front of him: mortifying.

First thing you’d do if you ran the country
Exile Katie Hopkins.

Last meal on earth
Lobster and chips.

First song you’ll sing at karaoke
Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’ by KT Tunstall.

Last time you exploited your position to get something
I honestly don't do it. Sometimes I get served at a busy bar first because the bartender spots me but even then I feel embarrassed for the other people who have been waiting.

First time you realised you were famous
When I saw a giant picture of my face on the back of a double-decker bus.

Last time someone criticised your work
I never really get criticised for my work but I'm constantly criticised about my weight on social media. Some of the tweets I've read are jaw-dropping and all you can do is laugh at how mental they are.

First three words your friends would use to describe you
Loyal, fun and late (for everything).

Last time you made an impulse buy and regretted it
The extremely expensive size 14 dress I swore I was going to get into for summer and is now gathering dust in the wardrobe.

First concert you ever attended
Michael Jackson at Glasgow Green in 1992.

Last time you bought someone flowers
I buy flowers every week for my house.

First object you’d save from your burning home
My Dieux du Stade calendar.

Last funny thing you saw online
Nothing will ever beat Fenton the Dog.

First job
Serving in the local deli where I grew up.

Last person you fantasised about
All of the men in the Dieux du Stade calendar.

First word you spoke
Dada.

Last crime you committed
Spelling Coco Chanel with two Ns.

First book you read for a second time
Enid Blyton's The Enchanted Wood.

Last song at your funeral
‘My Way’ by Frank Sinatra.

First person you’d thank in an award acceptance speech
My wonderful parents.

Last thing you recommended to someone
Artichokes in anything.

First thing you think of when you wake up in the morning
Checking Facebook and Twitter.

Last thing you think of before you go to sleep
Checking Facebook and Twitter.

Michelle McManus appears in Treasure Island, Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow, until Sun 18 Jan.
