James Veitch: The Fundamental Interconnectedness of Everyone with an Internet Connection

Comedian takes on spam mail in unshakeably confident performance full of promise

Youngsters, eh? Making the rest of us feel bad with their enthusiasm, versatile skillsets and new media proficiency. The youthful James Veitch is certainly no underachiever, with the strings on his bow including musician, comedian, director, writer and performer. In his comedy guise, he converts one man’s spam email to his own advantage, turning the tables on those setting out to con him by replying to convoluted effect and via extremely slick visuals.

The resulting conversations become increasingly ridiculous in a smart prey-turned-predator move that raises important questions about how we ever know who and what is real. He points out that when two people are pretending to be someone else, ‘somewhere in the middle lies a kernel of truth’.

Yet he’s not the first to subvert how we communicate: his correspondence is a more technologically advanced take on Robert Popper’s Timewaster Letters while Flight of the Conchords covered spam emailing both deftly and briefly with the character of Nigel Solatu. Veitch is a likeable performer, throwing in the occasionally self-effacing line, at one point saying: ‘I am single. Obviously.’ However, there is a real unshakeable confidence and ambition here that could see his agent’s inbox filling up quickly.
