Jin Hao Li: Swimming In A Submarine comedy review – On a winning path

This soft-spoken comic from Singapore makes a strong Fringe debut. Speaking much of his show in almost whispers, his understated delivery makes the material even more hilarious. Sharing his childhood dreams and nightmares, Jin Hao Li’s imaginative and unapologetically silly skits are spread throughout, with one highlight being about the doctor that the apple kept away.

Some excellent crowd work in which he repeats his opening gag with an intensely gentle voice whenever a new latecomer enters the room has everyone in stitches. As well as his completely fried fever dreams, Hao Li shares a few anecdotes, from his military service in Singapore to surviving seagulls in St Andrews (we all know which is likely to have been scarier). He performs at a continuously high standard for his whole show and is clearly on a winning path.

Jin Hao Li: Swimming In A Submarine, Pleasance Courtyard, until 25 August, 7.10pm, plus 24 August, 4pm; main picture: Rebecca Need-Menear.
