Jo Griffin: The Power Hour – Easy-going jocular set

Jo Griffin brings us a sweet and playful set with enough happy-go-lucky energy to win over her crowd. Gags about her dating life and some humble brags concerning her current living situation (a six-person house-share with two showers) paint a picture of a 36-year-old woman who may not have everything figured out yet.

Bouncing around Assembly George Square’s Box (a literal shipping container) in her neon turquoise converse and black dungarees, she powers through her comedy hour despite facing some end-of-Fringe burnout.

She describes waking up in a bedroom with a bare lightbulb and blank walls save for a single Reservoir Dogs poster, suddenly glad she hadn’t confessed her love for ‘Josh Hinge’ the night before. Although not every one of her punchlines lands, a select few of her anecdotes are spot-on.

These showstopping lines are slightly diluted by the main story arc which focuses on Griffin’s recent experience with magic mushrooms. This fun story is perhaps overshadowed by her more mundane and relatable anecdotes that score more laughs. With (not all that necessary) dance breaks throughout, and many a high-five for her favourite audience members, Griffin delivers an easy-going and enjoyable show.

Jo Griffin: The Power Hour, Assembly George Square, until 27 August, 9.15pm.
