Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley is to apologise to viewers today (3/10) after it emerged that a BBC worker posed as a phone-in competition caller.

It is the latest incident to come to light in which the broadcaster has been shown to mislead viewers.

A number of staff members have been disciplined for the editorial faux-pas which occurred during a pre-recorded section of the show in April last year.

The BBC said Whiley, who hosts the late morning show, was unaware that the caller was not genuine.

The DJ had pre-recorded some of the broadcast in order to attend the Queen’s opening of the refurbished Broadcasting House in London.

The BBC was fined £50,000 recently after Blue Peter allowed someone to pose as a competition winner.

Director general Mark Thompson has set up a new editorial standards board to restore confidence in the broadcaster.

The BBC Trust said managers were taking the appropriate action over the Jo Whiley show slip-up.

“The breach raises no new issues which require any change to the director general’s action plan,” a statement said.
