Jon Pointing: Act Natural

A promising but patchy exploration of a narcissistic acting teacher
At the top of the show, Jon Pointing strolls onto the stage, bag in hand, jacket on and begins to prep for the class he is about to take. The energy is low key and sadly never really picks up from that moment. We're in an acting class and Pointing is Cayden Hunter, our self-absorbed, narcissistic tutor, who is going to take us through the thespian motions and turn us into actors.
The piece is precisely and brilliantly performed; you certainly can't fault that. He's incredibly convincing, nailing the character perfectly. The problem is it's so precise that it feels like we actually are in an acting class. You can imagine being taught by this guy, thinking he's a bit of a tosser at the time then finding out sometime afterwards that he's on some sort of list or register.
Aside from a cheeky mirror exercise and his own acted interpretation of his life, for the most part the parody is too subtle and the gags too weak as he tells us his own story, flirts with a woman on the front row and tries to find his elusive 'dandelion' girl. Promising but needs some work.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 27 Aug (not 14), 7.15pm, £9–£11 (£8–£10).
