Julia Masli: ha ha ha ha ha ha ha comedy review – Brilliantly unpredictable clown show
Mannequin legs, smashed chairs and strong atmosphere lend themselves to an exhilarating late-night trip

Adopting a dress sense that somehow simultaneously takes from Miss Havisham and the Child Catcher, Julia Masli cuts an ethereal, gothy and mesmerisingly beautiful figure as she stalks her audience. She begins gently, teasing us with a few ‘repeat after me’ noises which increase in complexity and intensity, resulting in a woman’s chair getting smashed up.

Then out comes a mannequin leg; if it’s the same one from Masli’s 2019 award-winning Legs from 2019 then it’s had a Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen style makeover as it’s now painted gold. A microphone is taped to the foot and Masli pokes it in people’s faces and enquires ‘problem?’ Like an Eastern European Claire Rayner, she is here to soothe and solve people’s issues. A highly skilled clown, there’s pretty much nothing the audience give her that she can’t handle and, more remarkably, seems to have a prop for (though maybe we’re more predictable creatures than we think).
She’s a heady mix of emotions, bossily helpful, randomly angry, falls in love at least twice and is generally unpredictable. Creating an incredible atmosphere it seems appropriate somehow that these shows are so late/early. This is a wonderful, exhilarating ride that quite literally brings people together: tonight, two of her audience even swap phone numbers to arrange the rehoming of a cat.
Julia Masli: ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, Monkey Barrel, until 27 August, 1.30am.
