Kanan Gill: What Is This? comedy review – Life in the fourth decade

With this being Indian Independence Day, Kanan Gill allowed himself to make a couple of good-natured jibes at Britain’s expense, off-the-cuff comments that immediately demonstrated the ease of his comedy. This may be his Fringe debut but Gill is no inexperienced newbie, instead an established act in India having filmed stand-up specials, had a popular YouTube review series, made appearances in feature films and is now a published author.

Unsurprising then that this a polished, apparently effortless hour of stand-up. Gill’s material frames (and repeatedly returns to) the idiotic amount of bureaucracy involved in buying a piece of east-facing land back home. The meat of What Is This? explores Gill’s life now that he’s in his mid-thirties, focusing on the three elements that are considered important in India: position, partner and prayer. Gill worries he is simply the slumped figure of a man now released from the youthful optimism of his 20s. Towards the end there’s a lovely note of absurdity in the story of how Gill and his friend (neither of whom have any experience of European desserts other than eating them) entered the tiramisu world cup in Italy.
