Last night, Kathryn Joseph won the Scottish Album of the Year award, for Bones You Have Thrown Me And Blood I’ve Spilled.

The shortlist for the award also featured Belle and Sebastian, Errors, Happy Meals, Honeyblood, Paolo Nutini, PAWS, Slam, The Amazing Snakeheads and Young Fathers, though when it came down to it, Joseph’s entry was considered by the judges to be the ‘most outstanding’ Scottish album released between Jan 2014 and Mar 2015.

Speaking last night, Joseph said: ‘The shortlist was the weirdest thing in the world. Everyone I thought would be on the shortlist this year wasn't.'

Joseph’s win is significant, as the singer/songwriter is the first female to win the award. Speaking on her own female influences, she said: 'I saw Fleetwood Mac last night, so Stevie Nicks. I'm in a tricky age for being part of this, and yet last night I saw people who are – are they in their 60s? And it's proof that it doesn't matter what age you are. And I need to remember that because I do feel awkward about it, but last night was proof that it's not about being young or old or male or female – if it affects you it affects you.'

The artist also said she plans to use the £20,000 prize to create new work: ‘I was on maternity benefits when I made this record. I'm going to use the SAY Award money to make the next one.’

Last night’s ceremony took place at the O2 ABC, and was opened by 2014’s winners,Young Fathers. Other acts to play live on the night included Golden Teacher, Tuff Love and Loki and the Kartel.
