Kathy And Stella Solve A Murder ★★★★☆

As much about the strength of female friendship as true crime, Kathy And Stella Solve A Murder is a lively musical that takes a potentially dark subject and infuses it with energy and compassion. After the podcast hosts are disappointed by their idol, an arrogant author who is subsequently murdered, the apparently hapless duo are plunged into an investigation.
With an ensemble of three covering multiple roles with finesse, Rebekah Hinds and Bronté Barbé capture both the bruised innocence and enthusiasm of the titular twosome. A visit to the morgue becomes a romantic dream come true and while they’re undermined by family, their ambitions are irrepressible. A joyous celebration ensues in which they follow their bliss, even if it involves cadavers.

Much of the dynamism comes from a sprightly score by Matthew Lloyd Jones (of Frisky & Mannish fame). Forcing true crime details into familiar tropes from musical theatre creates a frisson of fun and it fits well into the tradition of late-night shows, fast enough to fight fatigue and loud enough to engage a rowdy audience. Witty and irreverent, Kathy And Stella is a warm-hearted romp.
Summerhall Roundabout, until Sunday 28 August, 9.50pm.
