Kathy Maniura: Objectified comedy review – Injecting life into inanimate objects

You’ve probably never wondered how the world looks from the eyes of an electric scooter, a lone AirPod or the Chancellor Of The Exchequer’s red budget box. That’s because, chances are, your mind doesn’t operate on the same frequency as the mystical brain of Kathy Maniura.

In her new show, Objectified, Maniura attempts to place herself in the hypothetical shoes of various inanimate objects, each with its own personality and unique quirks. Though the premise may sound abstract, Objectified is a far cry from the various half-baked attempts at zany comedy that embark on the Fringe each year. Rather, the So You Think You’re Funny Award finalist uses the most mundane everyday items to present a meticulously crafted, insightful gaze at contemporary society, interwoven with self-deprecating anecdotes about her high-flying flatmate and a particularly nasty run in the comic recently had with tonsilitis.

While some of the show’s more satirical content felt shoehorned in somewhat, Maniura’s endearing outlook on comedy was well-received by those in the tightly-packed Wee Room, many of whom gleefully played along when asked to participate. Maniura’s ability to personify almost anything is hugely engaging. If we all had minds as creative as hers, the world would likely be a far more entertaining place.

Kathy Maniura: Objectified, Gilded Balloon Teviot, until 28 August, 4.40pm.
