Kevin Quantum: Anti-Gravity cabaret review – Occasionally astonishing family fun

Quantum mechanics, the likely source of inspiration of Kevin Quantum’s stage name, is a field of science so baffling to most that it very much seems like magic. Luckily, over the course of an hour the Fife-born magician is here to guide you through both disciplines. Quantum is an engaging personality and has a great stage presence. His ability to work the crowd shines through, with one unexpected highlight being a memorable back-and-forth with a child who responded with ‘meow’ to most of the questions Quantum asked him. It’s always satisfying to learn while you’re laughing, and Quantum’s ability to communicate science to all ages is impressive. This unique blend adds an angle to Anti-Gravity, and at times he might benefit from leaning into the science aspect a little more.

Quantum is a seriously talented close-up magician, but card and balancing tricks can get a bit lost in a theatre of this size. The set pieces in Anti-Gravity are great fun: who doesn’t want to see a grumpy punter repeatedly receiving electric shocks when he tries to sit down? However, a few more ‘wow’ moments wouldn’t go amiss, and some of the sleight-of-hand tricks will be very familiar to seasoned magic fans. Despite this, Quantum’s winning personality and well-structured show paper over most of the cracks, and you’re guaranteed to still be thinking about Anti-Gravity a while after it’s finished.

Kevin Quantum: Anti-Gravity, Gilded Balloon Patter House, until 26 August, 2.30pm.
