Lara Ricote: Little Tiny Wet Show (Baptism) comedy review – Trials and tribulations

Following up a Best Newcomer-winning show is no small feat, but Ricote proves she has more to give with this expertly crafted, wonderfully unique new hour. Wasting no time to establish her absurdity, Ricote opens the show by looking us all in the eyes as she sings a gibberish version of ‘Let It Be’. From then we’re hanging on to her every word as she unreliably (but very relatably) narrates a story about the trials and tribulations of love and navigating a long-term relationship in your mid-20s.

Ricote’s traditional stand-up sections feel elevated compared to her debut. Brilliant bits of writing around growing up with beads instead of doors are interspersed with surreal outbursts and creative set pieces that, while keeping us on our toes, sometimes stand in stark contrast with each other. Luckily Ricote’s natural comedic instincts always manage to bridge the tonal gap. Between Just Stop Oil Barbies and an elaborate hair-pulling mime, real wisdom can be gleaned from Ricote’s hot takes on relationships (‘fight or change’ could easily be a chapter name in a self-help book, for instance). Straddling the line between goofy clown and femme fatale with captivating and hilarious results, Lara Ricote’s star remains firmly on the rise.
