Laser Kiwi

Sketch and circus merge for a fun and rapid hour
Remember when New Zealand got to vote on changing their flag? One of the stand-out losers of that referendum depicted the native kiwi bird shooting lasers out of its eyes. 'Laser kiwi' has since been celebrated as an emblem of New Zealanders' quirky sense of humour, and the name has been adopted by this trio of comic acrobats who arrive in Edinburgh fresh from an award-winning Adelaide run.
'Sketch' and 'circus' are two of the Fringe's favourite things, so it's no surprise that this fun hour goes down so well with a late-night audience. Degge, Imogen and Zane are effortlessly comic personalities and breeze through rapid-fire skits touching on everything from fashion to zebras to outer space. The clear highlight is a mesmerising silks routine from Imogen, accompanied by gloriously daft background antics from Degge; it perfectly skewers the seriousness of a lot of circus performance without ever detracting from its impressiveness.
After this centrepiece, one big punchline gone wrong shifts the pace off-kilter at tonight's performance, meaning the rest of the show feels a little rushed. But it's a very entertaining hour, one which pushes the boundary between circus and sketch comedy.
Assembly George Square Gardens, until 25 Aug (not 19), 10.30pm, £13–£15 (£12–£14).
