The Sheezus singer is the first name announced for Edinburgh's New Year's Eve celebrations

Lily Allen has been announced as the headliner for this year’s Concert in the Gardens on New Year’s Eve for Edinburgh's Hogmanay.

Allen follows in the footsteps of a stellar line-up of previous headliners, including the Pet Shop Boys, who were last year’s main attraction, Primal Scream and Biffy Clyro.

The appearance will end a busy year for the British pop star which has seen her release Sheezus, pick up an NME Award for Best British Solo Artist and headline a number of the biggest UK music festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude and V festival.

Globally recognised as a special way to bring in the new year, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is a three day celebration which also includes a street party, ceilidh, torchlight procession and a concert in St Giles Cathedral.

With its epic backdrop of the castle and midnight fireworks, the concert – which takes place in the city's Princes Street Gardens – is always of the celebration’s most talked about events
