MC Hammersmith: Straight Outta Brompton comedy review – Rap improv hits right notes

There’s a certain charm to posh folk effing and jeffing, which is something MC Hammersmith (aka Will Naameh) is happy to exploit. After a terribly polite introduction to his QR code (crowd members are encouraged to supply word prompts, questions and embarrassing stories), he re-takes his entrance in a flurry of f-bombs: straight outta Brompton he may be, but he came to slay. The format is familiar: audience suggestions appear, and Hammersmith launches into fast, supple and usually fully rhyming freestyle rap, mixing as he goes.

With a huge YouTube following, the gathering is on his side from the get-go; he’s funny and unfailingly kind, with his David Tennant/Harry Potter looks that only add to the humour. However, it’s clear that there’s a (white) elephant in the room: it’s difficult not to speculate on the intersection of Hammersmith’s following and a more traditional hip-hop fanbase, something impossible to explore further in a Fringe with practically no rap representation. That said, Hammersmith isn’t afraid to take a poke at his own privilege and, as a final farewell rap he namechecks all the audience volunteers and sends his crowd wild. There’s absolutely no doubting this MC’s skill.

MC Hammersmith: Straight Outta Brompton, Monkey Barrel, until 27 August, 12.30pm.
