Spare a thought for club promoters, Substance, as a series of unfortunate events meant that this gig nearly didn’t happen. Originally timed to celebrate the Edinburgh club night’s seventh birthday last October, a motorbike accident, venue closure, then a drug-related death at The Arches meant it was forced to switch date, city, then venue again.

So when Sascha Ring (aka Berlin-based techno/ambient producer Apparat, who fell from said motorbike), Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary (aka Berlin techno duo, Modeselektor) appear on stage, the crowd’s particularly noisy and enthusiastic welcome feels like a mixture of joy and relief now that they are at last able to perform. Standing in front of two intersected screens, the animated white-line, comic-style drawings shooting across them seem almost 3D and form part of the concert’s minimal lighting; a setting which accentuates the differing elements of the combined Modeselektor and Apparat sound.

‘A New Error’, ‘Rusty Nails’, ‘Versions’ and ‘Milk’ balance emotive chord sequences with shuffling beats and metronomic rhythms, using Apparat’s treated, haunting vocal to great effect, while ‘This Time’ and ‘Damage Done’ have a more cinematic, soundtrack feel. As tumbling figures are projected behind the trio, they mix chiming electronics, ascending guitar lines and synth pulses amongst breakbeats and rumbling, tribal drums on ‘Last Time’, ‘Les Grandes Marches’ and ‘Nr 22’.

Later, the enthralling and anthemic closing salvo of ‘Gita’, ‘Let in the Light’ and encore, ‘Therapy’, offer Moderat at their best, each track expertly showcasing their deft ability to move feet and stir emotions in equal measure.
