Mojo And Jimmy: The Comedy Magic Spectacular kids review – Energetic panto-esque fare
A bright, bubbly show that mixes playful magic with bouncy tunes for little ravers

Mojo’s a monkey, Jimmy’s a tomato. The two are unlikely besties and live in a forest where a sacred banana tree reigns supreme, so long as it continues to bear fruit. But when Jimmy accidentally eats the last banana, the two must go on a quest to find all manner of weird and wacky spell ingredients to restore the tree and save the forest. The magic elements are cleverly woven into this narrative, which gives the show grip and keeps us drawn in, even when the tricks are slight.
A search for a shell makes use of a bottomless box from which objects keep materialising; a stick hunt is a chance to play with telescopic magic wands, and there are some lovely sleight-of-hand giant card tricks to baffle little brains. It’s all tied together with brash, disco-lit, join-in songs, and the odd vulgar or political joke for parents. There are a couple of off-kilter moments: at one point a man in the audience is made to wear a ‘shame’ hat while we chant at him, which has a slight incitement-to-bullying feel, and for those of us with sensitive kids, spontaneously soaking the audience can be a problem. But overall, it’s a fun, well-meaning show: magic with a panto vibe.
Mojo And Jimmy: The Comedy Magic Spectacular, Assembly George Square Studios, until 25 August, 1.25pm.
