My Perfect Podcast: Sam Lake

In this column, we ask a pod person about the ‘casts that mean a lot to them. This month, it’s Sam Lake, the award-winning comedian whose weekly guests sip a favourite beverage while discussing things that make them emotional in I've Had A Rosé, Let's Talk About Feelings

My Perfect Podcast: Sam Lake

Which podcast educates you? I’m quite enjoying The Rest Is Entertainment which delves into a lot of secrets about how TV is made. I’m a bit of a conspiracy theorist when it comes to how TV shows are put together, so anytime I watch anything I’m always wondering how they do certain things: how do producers get reality TV show contestants to say exactly what they need them to? Or how did Corrie film the big tram crash sequence? Fascinating stuff.

Which podcast makes you laugh? Dear Joan & Jericha. I discovered this on the coach back from an awful gig in Manchester, and thank goodness. It’s the only thing that got me through sitting upright in the dark for five hours with only a half-eaten Snickers for comfort. Julia Davis and Vicki Pepperdine play two women doing an agony-aunt style show, responding to letters sent in from listeners. But it’s all improvised. They write the letters themselves and try to make the other one break. It’s just dark comedy gold. And the advice they give is wild, such as telling a woman to have an affair with her friend’s teenage son on a yacht. It’s positively unhinged.

Which podcast makes you sad or angry? Has to be Steven Bartlett’s Diary Of A CEO. Firstly, CEOs WHERE!? He’s always interviewing other celebs or random health ‘experts’. I only know the pod through TikTok clips and every one infuriates me. Secondly, the episode titles all read like 2010 Buzzfeed Clickbait: ‘Having Daily Prostate Massages Increases Your Testosterone!!’ ‘Clean And Jerk 150kg With This One Simple Trick!! NOT CLICKBAIT!’. It’s purely a vehicle for pseudo-science. It’s podcasts like this that I think have led to the trend of bulky aggro men giving absolutely bonkers ‘business and lifestyle advice’. There’s one viral video of a man explaining how he’s broken up his days into three days, so now he has 21 days in a week. It’s nonsense, and I wouldn’t immediately trust anyone who earnestly listens to it.

Which podcast is your guilty pleasure? It’s Diary Of A CEO. I listen to every episode. I drink Huel three times a day now, my testosterone is through the roof; I’m so fertile that I have six children despite never having sex. I cured my IBS by turning it into an NFT. Steven Bartlett is now my CFO in my crypto company that makes cloud-enabled milk alternatives. I’ve fixed my depression by simply not being depressed. I make $100m every six seconds. I can clean and jerk my Tesla. He’s a genius. He’s my idol.

Name someone who currently doesn’t have a podcast but totally should What a tough question because literally everyone I know has a podcast. I wouldn’t mind one from that lady who gets told about a new general election and she goes ‘you’re joking!? Not another one!!’ I’d just like to hear what else she has to say. I think she should be the first one to be told every breaking news story and then we can gauge our response accordingly.

Pitch us a new podcast idea in exactly 25 words DISGUSTIN! It’s a new podcast by Cher Lloyd that finds out what happened to the girls who didn’t flush the toilet after singing Cher Lloyd
