Nate Kitch: Something Different!!!!! comedy review – Postmodern yet old school
One thing is almost certain: this could be as Fringey as it gets

It’s hard to see where Nate Kitch is going with any of his show. While you wonder whether he himself knows, a section of the audience are certainly bemused. Those who are laughing don’t seem to know why. And it’s glorious. How to describe it then? He comes in carrying a folded-up chair under his arm saying ‘what’s going on here then?’ He leaves the room several times during the hour, pointing out that not everyone is getting it.
There’s a reference to 1915’s ‘Black Square’ painting by Malevich which appeared in last year’s Kitch affair, and this August he has recreated Matisse’s snail in crayon. There’s a book about Rasputin that he hasn’t read. There’s something of a routine about visiting his grandfather who has an indeterminate, constantly changing age. And he’s got a hat. Looking like Coronation Street’s 90s icon Jack Duckworth with his taped-up NHS-style specs, for all its surreal postmodern qualities there’s something delightfully old school about Kitch. Could this actually be a show about charlatans? Maybe. Is Kitch a charlatan? No, he’s too funny for that. One thing is almost certain: this could be as Fringey as it gets.
Nate Kitch: Something Different!!!!!, Gilded Balloon Patter House, until 25 August, 5pm.
