National theatre tour to Bring on the Bollywood

Anglo-Indian romance to shower a festival of colours and dance on theatre-goers

Described as a 'comedic romp of East meets West', artist and producer Samir Bhamra's latest dance-theatre production, Bring on the Bollywood, is embarking on a 11-city tour from May–Aug this summer.

Inspired by classic Indian cinema, Bring on the Bollywood promises a festival of colour and a romantic riot of Anglo-Indian exuberance in its telling of an Indian expat doctor who returns to her home country from London for her younger brother's wedding. There she navigates social and family pressures to find a match. Could it be the handsome Bollywood filmmaker or his newly eligible British personal assistant?

Director Bhamra says: 'Bollywood is widely perceived to be a low-brow art-form that requires no skill. Not only is it – in my experience – the hardest art-form to crack, but it shares more than people realise with the classical Western arts. Bollywood would not exist if it were not for Shakespeare being presented in British India, and soon adapted into local languages for the wider communities. Both traditions teach us valuable lessons about people and life, and that's why they continue to connect so well.'

In addition to his role as artistic director of BotB's production company, Phizzical Productions, and as creative director of the London Asian Film Festival, Bhamra has produced large performances during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
