New on Netflix UK: April 2017 – Better Call Saul returns for season 3

Rodney King, Dear White People, Girlboss, Sand Castles and The Babadook, among April highlights on Netflix
One of the most highly anticipated returning series of 2017 debuts on Netflix in the UK on Tue 11 Apr, as the life and times of one Jimmy McGill, aka Saul Goodman, are explored in Breaking Bad prequel, Better Call Saul. The big news is that one of Breaking Bad's best characters will be making an appearance in season 3, as Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) will play an important role in the transformation of Jimmy into Saul. Rumours abound of other Breaking Bad alum popping up along the way. Either way, we'll be locked in for the weekly release of episodes.
Spike Lee makes his Netflix directorial debut with a timely one man show entitled Rodney King (28 Apr) released on the 25th Anniversary of the day four LAPD officers who were videotaped brutally beating King were acquitted by the state court. The film is written by and stars Roger Guenveur Smith who has been performing the play for the last four years and is one of Lee's regular players.
The first trailer for Dear White People (28 Apr) had idiots up in arms and declaring they were cancelling their Netflix subscriptions because the show appeared 'racist.' Justin Simien's satirical comedy film of the same name from 2014 was so smart, funny and on-point he was offered his own TV show. Logan Browning takes over from Tessa Thompson as straight talking radio host Samantha White who calls out maddening hypocrisy at the Ivy League College she attends.
Look out for the first season of Girlboss (21 Apr) created by Kay Cannon (Pitch Perfect) and based on the bestselling book by Sophia Amorusa. Britt Robertson stars as the rebellious Sophia who carves out her own fashion empire. Other Netflix TV special include the second part of Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down (7 Apr) and the latest stand-up show from Louis CK (4 Apr).
Love him or hate him, Adam Sandler, is a major part of the Netflix family and he's here to stay. His latest film, Sandy Wexler (14 Apr), stars Sandler in the titular role as an LA talent agent and Jennifer Hudson as an aspiring singer. From looking at the trailer there are cameos galore from the likes of Chris Rock, Vanilla Ice and Pauly Shore. Another Netflix Original film, Sand Castle (21 Apr), stars Nicholas Hoult and Henry Cavill as soldiers in a story inspired by true events from the Iraq War.
Horror fans should check out Jennifer Kent's astounding debut about motherhood and grief in The Babadook (16 Apr) and Nicolas Winding Refn's icky vision of the world of modelling, The Neon Demon (15 Apr). Also of note in film this month are music documentary, Springsteen & I (1 Apr) and Steven Soderbergh's stripper drama Magic Mike (13 Apr). Celluloid Man (1 Apr) is an excellent documentary about the legendary Indian archivist PK Nair who dedicated his life to preserving films which would be lost forever otherwise and is heart-breaking and essential viewing for cinephiles.
