Featuring The Get Down, Creed, Brooklyn and season 2 of Gotham

Baz Lurhmann, Grandmaster Flash, Nas and a whole host of other talent have grouped together to create a musical drama series, The Get Down, set in the South Bronx in the late 1970s that chronicles the rise of hip-hop and the demise of disco. The cast is a mix of newcomers and experienced actors including Jaden Smith, Jimmy Smits and Giancarlo Esposito. You're latest binging obsession debuts Friday 12 August.

With the exciting news that Gotham has cast Benedict Samuel (Walking Dead) as Mad Hatter for season 3 now might be a perfect time to catch up with the Batman spin-off as season 2 appears on 14 August. Also in TV the entirety of beloved comedy Don't Trust the B**** in Apartment 23 starring Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Dreama Walker and James Van Der Beek appears on 1 August. Its biting humour lovingly mocks the quirkiness of New York set comedies with the characters getting up to all kinds of bad behaviour and forming dysfunctional friendships. It was sadly axed back in 2013, but here's hoping Netflix revive it soon.

In film, Rocky reboot Creed directed by Ryan Coogler appears on 16 August. Michael B Jordan plays the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed, Adonis, who rises up to the challenge with the help of the Italian Stallion. Sylvester Stallone was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor for reprising his role but Jordan's indomitable performance is just as impressive.

If you're in the mood for a weepie Oscar nominated drama Brooklyn delivers a perfect blend of humour and heartfelt moments. Saoirse Ronan is quite simply sublime as an Irish immigrant in 1950s America who has to choose between the comforts of home, the giddy excitement of big city life and two men. Colm Toibin's novel has been exquisitely adapted by Nick Hornby.

The first-ever animated feature film adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's 1943 novel, The Little Prince, premieres on Netflix on 5 August. Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams and Paul Rudd provide the voices for this tale of childhood and friendship from Kung Fu Panda director Mark Osborne.
