New on Netflix UK: May 2017 – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt back for season 3

House of Cards, Sense8, Master of None, Hot Fuzz and War Machine among May highlights on Netflix

After a change in showrunners (from Beau Willimon to Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese) Frank and Claire Underwood finally make their return in the highly anticipated fifth season of House of Cards on 30 May. Not much has been revealed about the show as yet but Patricia Clarkson has been added to the cast. Also in TV, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 3 (19 May), Master of None Season 2 (12 May) and Sense8 Season 2 (5 May) make a welcome return and Bloodline (26 May) airs for its third and final season. A brand new show based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's series of Anne of Green Gables novels about an idealistic young orphan who is mistakenly sent to a family farm instead of a boy simply entitled Anne begins on 12 May. And for fans of Making a Murderer another real crime series investigating the unsolved murder of a nun in 1969 called The Keepers appears on 19 May.

You can celebrate the tenth anniversary of the release of Edgar Wright's hilarious action comedy Hot Fuzz at home by watching it on Netflix on 11 May. The second film in the Cornetto Trilogy was actually released on Valentine's Day in UK cinemas and stars Simon Pegg as tough London cop, Nick Angel, who uncovers the seedy underbelly of a quaint English village. Much of the filming took place in Wright's beloved home city of Wells who are celebrating with outdoor screenings at The Bishops Palace – the place where Angel first meets the NWA.

It's been 30 years since Robert Townsend scraped together enough cash and leftover rolls of film to make his satirical comedy Hollywood Shuffle (1 May). Sick and tired of trying to make it as an actor in LA, Townsend instead decided to poke fun at the business by writing, directing, producing and starring in a film ridiculing the stereotypical roles offered to African American actors.

Also in film, Brad Pitt stars as an army general in David Michod's War Machine (26 May), which is inspired by Michael Hastings book The Operators, a shocking behind-the-scenes portrait of the war in Afghanistan. Broken hearts, broken homes and the healing process are contemplated in Alma Har'el's enchanting documentary LoveTrue (7 May) that poetically pieces together the past, present and imaginary futures of a stripper, surfer and singer from across three USA states. It's an exquisitely crafted film that boasts huge emotional intelligence and empathy and features a beautiful score from Flying Lotus.
