The best thing about October is Halloween. And Netflix are getting into the spirit of all things spooky with several new series. Firstly the reboot of of everyone's favourite teenage witch with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (26 Oct) (read review) which, much like Riverdale before it, is adapted for TV by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for a darker take on the original Archie Comics characters. Kiernan Shipka, best known as Sally Draper in Mad Men, takes the title role alongside Michelle Gomez, Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto.

Get ready to hide behind the sofa, The Haunting of Hill House (12 Oct) is an update of Shirley Jackson's classic 1959 book, often cited as one of the greatest horror novels of all time, about a family who live alongside the supernatural.

There's also creepy cookery show The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell (12 Oct); first person accounts of 'real' ghostly encounters in Haunted (19 Oct); vampiric videogame anime in Castlevania: Season 2 (26 Oct); original films include Malevolent (5 Oct) and Apostle (12 Oct) while kids can join the frightening fun with animated feature Gnome Alone (19 Oct) as a high-schooler takes on mini monsters from another dimension and Super Monsters Save Halloween (5 Oct).

Horror films added to the catalogue include the 2010 remake of violent revenge thriller I Spit on Your Grave (1 Oct); the entire human/vampire love story in the Twilight Saga (9 Oct); serial killer action in Hannibal Lecture prequel Red Dragon and sequel Hannibal (both 5 Oct); gore a-go-go in Saw: The Final Chapter (11 Oct) and Paul Bettany plays a warrior priest battling (more) vampires in Priest (5 Oct).

Away from the ghouls and ghosties there's the return of Daredevil for Season 3 (19 Oct), Netflix's best co-production with Marvel, which sees the Kingpin of Crime, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), out of jail and back in Hell's Kitchen. Making a Murderer Season 2 (19 Oct) continues the story of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey's fight for exoneration. There's a new Derren Brown special Sacrifice (19 Oct), which sounds like it was inspired by The Bodyguard, as Mr Brown attempts to manipulate an ordinary person into taking a bullet for a stranger. 22 July (10 Oct) sounds like a harrowing watch but after United 93 we expect director Paul Greengrass' account of Anders Breivik's terrorist massacre in Norway will be gripping, respectful and moving.
