Alexander Payne once again proves he is at home with the road movie in the incredibly moving Nebraska which will be available from 14 November. Bruce Dern and Will Forte star in a wintry Midwestern adventure that explores the beautiful bond between father and son and the subject of Alzheimer’s. Payne’s trademark acerbic wit is still there and channelled through June Squibb. Both Dern and Squibb were nominated for Oscars for their performances.

Marvel’s Jessica Jones is the exciting new original series from Netflix on 20 November. It stars Krysten Ritter in the title role playing a former superhero turned private investigator. Melissa Rosenberg (The OC / Dexter / Twilight) acts as showrunner adapting Brian Michael Bendis' superlative comic series Alias for the small screen, it is rumoured to be very racy compared to the rest of Marvel’s film and TV output. Former Doctor Who, David Tennant also stars.

Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure is a clever subversion of the disaster movie as a way to question modern masculinity and will be available at the end of the month. Östlund centres in on the fight-or-flight response by creating a grand, exhilarating spectacle in the form of an avalanche. He astutely and wittily challenges society’s ingrained gender role expectations in one single scene.

Irreverent comedy sequel Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues sees Will Ferrell and the rest of the news team return with aplomb. Surreal and jam packed full of laughs, for every joke that doesn’t work, there’s another good one round the corner.
