Alternating with little disruption between wanking jokes and pornography jokes, Nick Dixon manages to entertain a specific demographic: sadly it's one this audience member did not fall into. 'Low-brow' comedy can be a lot of fun, but in Marriage Material, an hour-long set focusing largely on one failed relationship, these quips felt rather depressing.

While moments of his misfortune had clear comic potential – bringing his girlfriend back to his apartment to find the roof had fallen in being one of them – Dixon's delivery veered towards a bitter tone, making it feel like the wounds of his break-up were a little too fresh to be funny. Circumstances out of his control had also left the comedian flustered upon arrival at the venue, but while he began with some gentle patter with the audience to warm up, the promise of a lift of energy as the hour progressed was never really fulfilled.

At a particularly low moment, his comedy leaned towards the demeaning with nasty blows at Scousers and Loiners while quipping about women as marital property earned only the most generous of laughs, and left the rest of us with a bad taste in our mouths. With stronger material and a more modern attitude towards sex and relationships, Dixon would certainly impress with his confidence and charisma. Unfortunately, in Marriage Material it all falls very flat.
