Three Grammy wins, over 500 million records sold and a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee. Nile Rodgers is a man who, you would think, needs no introduction. Yet at the beginning of this relatively intimate show at O2 Academy Edinburgh, Rodgers asked 'is this anyone's first Chic show?' A resulting cheer indicated there were in fact some newbies in the house. 'Well, I better introduce myself and tell you what we're all about.'

From that moment Rodgers brought soul, charm and his iconic guitar-chucking style as he played a selection of greatest hits. With no need to hold back, songs like 'Everybody Dance' and 'We Are Family' got the crowd excited, but it was the medley of iconic numbers he's created for other well-known artists that showed just how prolific the man is. From Madonna and David Bowie to Diana Ross, not to mention an enthusiastically received version of Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky', Rodgers demonstrated that any funk and soul hit you've ever danced to at a party probably came from his brain.

The only thing fans of Rodgers enjoy more than his songs are the anecdotes about how he wrote them. 'Thinking Of You' and 'Lost In Music', two Sister Sledge tracks he recalled penning over the phone in the early hours with co-producer Bernard Edwards when they were both 'too lost in music' to sleep, were dedicated to his late friend. Chic's current all-star collective consists of drummer Ralph Rolle, bassist Jerry Barnes, trumpet player Steve Jankowski, saxophonist Brandon Wright, and keyboard players Richard Hilton and Russell Graham. Singer Audrey Martells delivered impeccable vocals as she made her touring debut with the band while longer-standing singer Kimberly Davis stunned with her powerful belts.

The euphoric 'Good Times' was the chosen closer, over which Rodgers sang a few verses from The Sugarhill Gang's 'Rapper's Delight' (clearly no grudges being held here after a copyright infringement wrangle back in the day) before taking in the audience's love. He may have been playing the same songs since the 1970s but Nile Rodgers still loves what he does. And so do we.

Nile Rodgers & Chic tour until Friday 24 September then Friday 10 June–Friday 29 July; review from O2 Academy Edinburgh, Tuesday 21 September.
