Pali And Jay’s Ultimate Asian Wedding DJ Roadshow theatre review: Bhangra bursts and steady reveals

Pali and Jay have just turned up to their latest wedding gig. Pali is earnest, proud of his ageing decks and, we sense, not the sharpest tool in the shed. His nephew Jay is 27 and set for a life of stardom (in his own opinion). He’s also feckless and spoilt, gets drunk on the job, and can’t be bothered to align the speakers properly. A chaotic night unfolds, with plenty of audience interaction, bursts of bhangra and flashing disco lights.

There are sprinklings of British-Asian cultural references throughout, some of which, I admit, fly over my head. But there’s no obligation for Fringe shows to spoon-feed white reviewers. A more legitimate criticism might be that it takes a while to reveal the depth of these characters with a script that is backloaded with emotional weight.

Once the drama starts ramping up though, the audience is drawn into a relationship that’s a lot more complicated and poignant than it first seems. Death, divorce and DJ-on-DJ sabotage are all in the mix. By the end, we root for the plucky duo to patch up their differences and climb up the Google rankings for Asian wedding DJs in . . . Southall.
