Phil Wang: Philth

A low-key and not-especially filthy alternative to an otherwise manic Fringe
As part of sketch trio Daphne, Phil Wang has found complementary outlets to bounce his deadpan stage presence off. When he’s the only thing to focus on or listen to, it can sometimes feel as though the life is being sucked out of a room, even if he does offer some enjoyable material when reflecting upon his low-energy Todd Barry-esque delivery.
Philth (as misleading a punning title as you’ll encounter all month) kicks off with a straw poll on whether anyone has a weirder name than his in the room (tonight, someone’s surname actually rhymes with his) while he announces that he’s already thinking ahead to the 2020 general election. A bit of light Aberdeen-baiting jogs surprisingly along and he’s then into the meat of his theme: his pursuit to be less anxious. He’s attempting this via a phone app which, you’ll be less than astonished to hear, is causing him yet more stress.
Wang is after love and seems mildly content to have found an ‘OK’ girlfriend. You wouldn’t really expect him to be any more enthusiastic than that. In a festival where being loud and crazy can be a mite wearing, some downbeat Philth is a delightful antidote.
