Can you believe it's only 161 days until citizens across the US next celebrate National Pig Day on 1 March? A day when pig-lovers across small parts of the Midwestern United States 'accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized (sic), place as one of man's most intellectual and domesticated animals.' It's all thanks to a pair of sisters who created this momentous celebration back in 1972 although, curiously, much of this joyful ceremony entails the ritual killing and consumption of these poor beasts.

And what better reason than that tenuous countdown could there be to scour our listings for porcine themed events?

Let's kick off with Fat Pig, a play by serial misanthrope Neil LaBute, about a man struggling to come to terms with his relationship with a plus-sized woman. Or if misogyny is off the cards then how about Enda Walsh's Disco Pigs, a drama about a pair of alcoholics celebrating their 17th birthdays on a violent boozy binge. Pig Farm from Greg Kotis, the Tony Award-winning writer of Urinetown the Musical, is a dark farce about a trio defending their struggling farm from a gun-weilding intruder. It sounds a bit like Withnail & I meets Straw Dogs, which is a magical combination.

Perhaps you're looking for something to entertain the kids, in which case Peppa Pig might be a safer bet. Peppa Pig's Surprise sees the titular piglet delighted by something wondrous and unexpected; hopefully it's not a visit from a serving Prime Minister.

The Three Little Pigs feature in three adaptations for kids. Starting with this interactive Hallowe'en-themed show suitable for pre-school children.
